Smooth boarding at the pier

KD Frankfurt cruises board from the red, blue, and white KD Ticket Office on Mainkai, next to the Eiserner Steg footbridge. The Mainz Advent cruise boards from the KD jetty at Jockel-Fuchs-Platz 3 in Mainz. The Rhine Valley day trip meets on the pavement at Wiesenhüttenplatz 38, Frankfurt. Arrive 15 minutes early for KD cruises; 10 minutes early for the day trip.

Frankfurt's skyline, bridges, and riverside life from the water

Both the daytime panorama cruise and the evening lounge cruise follow the same Main River corridor: east toward Gerbermühle, back through central Frankfurt. By day, you see the full sweep of the Mainhattan skyscrapers, the medieval Römerberg, 12 riverside museums along the Museumsufer, St. Paul's Church, and the Sachsenhausen district on the south bank. By night, the same landmarks are lit up, reflected in the river, with a DJ rather than commentary providing the soundtrack.

Two decks, two atmospheres on the Main River

The MS Palladium has an enclosed main deck with panoramic windows at water level and an open sun deck above (staircase access). On clear days, the upper deck frames Frankfurt's skyline without glass between you and the view. The main deck stays comfortable in rain and cooler months. Seating on both decks is first-come on arrival.

Commentary vs. atmosphere: choose your experience

The 1-hour panorama cruise and the combo include loudspeaker commentary in English and German throughout. The evening lounge cruise has no commentary; the focus is on atmosphere, with the DJ moving to the open-air deck in fine weather. The Mainz Advent cruise has no commentary either; Christmas background music plays as you sail the Rhine past Mainz's illuminated winter skyline.

Beyond Frankfurt: the Rhine Valley and Mainz

The Rhine Valley full-day tour travels by air-conditioned coach for roughly 90 minutes to the Middle Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then boards a Rhine steamer for a 90-minute cruise past 40-plus medieval castles, including the Loreley Rock and the Niederwald Monument above Rüdesheim. Lunch is included at a riverside restaurant in Assmannshausen, followed by a wine tasting. The Mainz Advent cruise is a 2-hour reserved-seat sailing on the Rhine from Mainz, available during the Advent season only, past the city's medieval towers and festive waterfront.

Food and drinks for added comfort

All cruises have a bar on board. You can buy snacks, beer, wine, and soft drinks, all at extra cost. Lunch is included in the Rhine Valley day trip, with a traditional fare in Assmannshausen.

Things to know before booking your Frankfurt cruise tickets

  • Frankfurt's cruises split naturally by how much time you have and how far you want to go. A 1-hour panorama cruise on the Main River is the classic choice. You see the skyline, the Römer, the Museum Embankment, and nine historic bridges in a single loop.
  • Step up to the combo ticket to add a full day on the hop-on-hop-off bus, covering the rest of the city at your own pace.
  • If you have a full day free, the Rhine Valley tour takes you out of the city entirely with a coach ride through the Taunus hills, a 90-minute Rhine steamer cruise past 40-plus medieval castles, a riverside lunch, and a wine tasting in Assmannshausen, all included. The Rhine Valley day trip needs a minimum of four passengers to run, and in winter or during high or low water the Rhine steamer is replaced by a castle visit.
  • Choose based on the time of day. The daytime panorama cruise is the clear option for sightseeing: sharp light, unobstructed skyline views, and English and German commentary throughout.

  • If you want the city after dark, the evening lounge cruise runs from 8pm to 10pm with a DJ instead of commentary, and Frankfurt's glass towers reflecting in the river at night are worth the later start. The cruise runs on selected dates only, so verify availability before booking.
  • Visiting in the Advent season? The Mainz Advent cruise is a 2-hour reserved-seat Rhine sailing from Mainz at 3pm, timed perfectly for the city lights to come on as you return to the jetty.
  • Not all cruises board from the same place, so check before you travel. The KD Frankfurt cruises depart from the KD Ticket Office on Mainkai, right beside the Eiserner Steg footbridge, easy to find and central to the old town. The Mainz Advent cruise departs from the KD jetty in Mainz, a separate city 40 minutes by train. The Rhine Valley day trip meets at the pavement outside Wiesenhüttenplatz 38 near Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof.
  • Food and drinks are not included on the KD river cruises. The MS Palladium has a bar serving snacks, beer, wine, and soft drinks throughout the cruise, all at extra cost, and outside food and drink are not permitted on board. The Rhine Valley day trip is the exception: lunch and wine tasting are both included in the price, though drinks at the restaurant are extra.

About the Main River in Frankfurt

A tributary of the Rhine, the Main River is the longest entirely German river, stretching 524 kilometers from the Upper Franconian highlands to its confluence with the Rhine near Mainz.

In Frankfurt, it plays a vital economic and logistical role, supporting inland shipping and connecting the city to Europe’s extensive waterway network. The river is regulated by a series of locks, ensuring navigability year-round. Frankfurt’s section of the Main is spanned by numerous historic and modern bridges, including the iconic Eiserner Steg, and hosts regular passenger and cargo traffic.
